Klai Kang Won Palace

Hua Hin Attractions

One of the quintessential landmarks of Hua Hin, Klai Kang Won Palace is the summer residence of HM King Bhumibhol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and other members of the royal family. Klai Kang Won, meaning ‘far from worries’, is aptly named after the peace and serenity of the surrounding landscape, fronting a secluded stretch of the Hua Hin beachfront.

Highlights – Charms of Years Gone By

King Rama VII commissioned the palace construction in 1926, after Hua Hin Train Station was built and the southern-northern rail line officially linked. In those early days, Thailand first started to open its doors to western culture and architecture. Most of the palaces and government buildings constructed during that period show heavy European influence, as nearly all were designed by Italian architects.

The same applies to Klai Kang Won Palace, which showcases the style of a traditional Spanish estate. Set in picturesque surroundings, the palace complex comprises four main buildings. The two-storey ‘Phra Tamnak Piem Suk’ is the King and Queen’s residence, complete with a beautiful Roman garden, a sundial and walkway that leads to the beachfront.

Members of the royal family reside in separate buildings, housed in the same manicured grounds. These buildings showcase various architectural styles, from modern Thai to European log cabin.

The King's Palace

Today, HM King Bhumibhol resides permanently at Klai Kang Won Palace, in the main Spanish-style building, or ‘Phra Tamnak Piem Suk’. Whenever the King or members of the royal family are in residence at Klai Kang Won, Phetkasem Road is decorated with the corresponding royal flags, bearing the royal emblem and colour of either the King or the particular member of the royal family staying there.

When the palace is not occupied, it’s open to the public, but you’ll have to get a permit from the Royal Household Office to be able to visit. A small admission fee is also charged.

Opening Hours: 08:30 - 15:30 (only when the palace is not occupied)
